Phillies: Domingo Germán vs. Aaron Nola The sting of yesterday’s loss is made all the sharper by effort it took. The Yankees came all the way back to tie it 7-7 on DJ LeMahieu’s heroic ninth-inning, three run homer, only to see it spoiled by a circus-time extra-inning walk-off. All they can do is try to avenge the defeat with a win this afternoon.Domingo Germán gets the ball for his twelfth start of the year. He has surprisingly been the Yankees’ second-best starter behind Gerrit Cole with Corey Kluber out injured. The changeup and curveball are both plus-pitches that have helped him maintain a 97th-percentile chase rate. Getting batters to expand so much has helped drive a 91st-percentile walk rate. Since being sent down following a shaky first two starts, Germán has pitched to a 2.35 ERA while walking less than five percent of batters faced https://www.nyygear.com/jay-bruce-jersey. On the year, he is 4-3 with a 3.12 ERA, 4.55 FIP, and 55 strikeouts in 60.2 innings. He will face off against Aaron Nola. Despite being staff ace, he is actually the Phillies’ second-best starter after Zack Wheeler, owner of the second-highest pitching fWAR in MLB so far https://www.nyygear.com/gleyber-torres-jersey. Still, Nola is still a lockdown starter, something the Yankees know well. He memorably struck out 12 in six innings of three-hit, one-run ball when the teams met last season. In 13 starts this season, Nola is 4-4 with a 4.06 ERA, 3.45 FIP, and 85 strikeouts in 75.1 innings.DJ LeMahieu delivered the game-saving blow to send it to extras last night, and boy would the Yankees love for his bat to get hot. Gary Sánchez has three multi-hit games in his last four, and has looked much more balanced at the plate. As Jameson Taillon found out yesterday, this Phillies lineup has virtually no soft landing spots. Jean Segura and Bryce Harper each had three-hit games yesterday so it will be important for Germán to navigate around their dangerous bats. General Discussions
Harvey Day, Wright scratched with sore neck Matt Harvey had his worst outing of the season on Monday, allowing an earned run in just 5.1 innings of work against the Marlins. Despite not having his best stuff, he left the Mets in a position to win the game until the Marlins plated a run against Bobby Parnell in the 9th. The Mets would again take the lead in the 15th, but the Marlins would score a pair in the bottom of the inning to walk away with a win. The full box score available here. The loss wasn't the only bad news for Mets fans on Monday, as David Wright was scratched from the lineup with a sore neck. Wright is currently listed as day to day. Also injured last night was Giancarlo Stanton, who hurt his hamstring running out a play in the 10th. Stanton was placed on the DL after the game, and replaced by Marcell Ozuna.Rob Neyer looked at Matt Harvey's fantastic start to his career, and poured a little cold water on it by comparing him to Brett Myers. It's easy to forget how good a young starter Myers was when he debuted because of his world-class douchebaggery.Yesterday, NBA player Jason Collins announced that he's gay. That probably wasn't the worst news of the day for Nats fans either, as Stephen Strasburg is being treated for "forearm tightness".The Braves have been without outfielder Jason Heyward for about a week now, and it looks like they'll be without him for a bit longer. I'm sure there will be some fun criticisms of Heyward from Braves fans because of this.On most nights, a 15-inning game would be the longest game of the evening. Not last night though, as the A's and Angels need 19 innings to find a winner.Remember that time when the Mets needed outfielders? Remember that time when the Mets TRAIDed for a broken J.J. Putz? One of the players involved in that trade is off to a pretty ridiculous start this season Francisco Lindor Jersey.Jon Heyman sent out a tweet yesterday that got quite a reaction from baseball fans, but both BtB and FanGraphs had excellent responses to his query.
